How to Prepare for a Dental Implant Procedure: Dr. Regina Kuningas-Ott’s Advice
Hello! I’m glad you’ve decided to improve your oral health and restore missing teeth in the best possible way — with dental implants. To ensure the procedure goes smoothly, there are some important preparations you should make.
1. Initial Consultation
- Medical History: Be prepared to share information about your health status, including chronic conditions (such as diabetes or high blood pressure) and medications you are using. Certain health conditions or medications may require adjustments before the procedure.
- X-rays or CT Scan: We will take images to assess the condition of your jawbone and determine the best placement for the implants.
- Dental Health Check: We will examine your teeth and gums. If there are any gum diseases or infections, they should be treated before the procedure.
2. Preparations Before the Procedure
- Quit Smoking: If you smoke, try to reduce smoking before the procedure. Smoking can slow healing and increase the risk of implant failure.
- Medication Adjustments: If you take blood thinners or other medications, we may adjust the dosages temporarily in cooperation with your doctor to reduce the risk of bleeding.
- Antibiotics: In some cases, we may prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
- Fasting: If the procedure involves sedation, you should avoid eating and drinking for 6–8 hours before the appointment.
3. The Day Before the Procedure
- Rest: Get a good night’s sleep to prepare your body for healing.
- Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth thoroughly, but avoid using alcohol-based mouthwash.
- Prepare for Recovery: Stock up on soft foods and over-the-counter pain relievers. Patients rarely experience pain after the procedure, but it’s good to have painkillers available just in case.
4. Procedure Day
- Comfortable Clothing: Wear something loose and comfortable, especially if the procedure involves sedation.
- Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home if you are undergoing a sedation procedure.
- Follow Instructions: Arrive on time and follow all last-minute instructions from our team.
After the procedure, I will provide you with detailed instructions to promote healing. Dental implant results in a stronger, healthier, and more functional smile – it’s worth it!
